通常情況下，報刊所載消息多為已發(fā)生過的事，按日常英語語法，標題中的動詞應(yīng)使用過去時態(tài)，但是這樣容易給人產(chǎn)生一種陳舊感，似有“昨日黃花”之嫌，缺乏吸引力。為了彌補這一缺陷，英語新聞標題常用一般現(xiàn)在時從形式上來增強報道的新鮮感（freshness）、現(xiàn)實感（reality）和直接感（immediacy）。此外，標題構(gòu)成形式采用動詞的一般現(xiàn)在時還可省去動詞過去式構(gòu)成形式中常見的“ed”兩個字母，節(jié)省標題詞數(shù)。正因為一般現(xiàn)在時在英語新聞標題中的這一特殊用法，初讀英語報紙的讀者應(yīng)特別注意這一現(xiàn)象，不要把它誤以為是日常英語語法中的一般現(xiàn)在時，從而影響對全文內(nèi)容的閱讀與理解。例如：

Toxic mushroom kills 6 farmers．

（＝Toxic mushroom killed 6 farmers．）

2）動詞的將來時更多地直接采用動詞不定式來表達。
